THE COMMITTEE'S MISSION
In 1963, the then Mayor of Rockford, Ben Schliecker, asked Joe Marino to organize an Independence Day Celebration for the city of Rockford. That's when the ALL VOLUNTEER Rockford 4th of July Committee was formed. The purpose of the committee was to celebrate the birth of our great nation with a parade, a firework show, and other family events. The goal then and now is to provide family entertainment for the Rockford community and other surrounding towns in an effort to have people stay in the area to celebrate Independence Day instead of seeking this type of entertainment out of town on crowded holiday highways. While keeping the community off the crowded highways, the 4th of July Committee knows that lives are being saved.
Another important part of the Rockford 4th of July Committee's mission is to provide all this family entertainment without spending any tax dollars. This was done in 1963 and is still being done today. The Rockford 4th of July Committee feels a strong responsibility to the community and country to "LET FREEDOM RING," which was the theme then and still is today.

Fireworks
The Rockford Fourth of July has the largest firework show in the state of Illinois with over 4,000 shells that light up the sky over the beautiful Rock River and is Rockford's second largest tourist attraction. These spectacular fireworks dazzle the audience with large, colorful, breath taking displays which are computer fired to ensure precision and accuracy. This incredible show last over 30 minutes and is syncronized to music on radio B103 (103.1 fm) and televised on WTVO Channel 17 (cable channel 4). This fabulous show kicks off at 9:30 p.m. by Davis Park in downtown Rockford, IL.
